Southeast District Map

The Southeast District of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection covers six counties, including, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee. The geographical area includes portions of the Indian River Lagoon, the nation’s most diverse estuary; Loxahatchee River, the state’s only National Wild and Scenic River; one of the nation’s largest freshwater lakes, Lake Okeechobee; and the unique and beautiful Everglades System, including Florida Bay and the Kissimmee River. In addition to these extraordinary natural systems, Southeast Florida contains approximately one-third of Florida’s total population, with more than 5 million residents. Increasing population, urbanization and industrialization continue to place great stresses on our natural resources. We are committed to the protection of our extraordinary natural resources, and we strive to strike a balance between that commitment and responsible economic development.

Have an Environmentally Friendly Holiday!

With millions of Americans hitting the roads or the skies this holiday season to travel over the river and through the woods, it's no wonder that it is important to advocate environmentally friendly traveling over the next few weeks.  Here are a few tips to make this holiday season a little more green.

Leave the Flying to Santa: If possible, skip flying and drive or take the train instead.  Traveling by airplane releases significantly more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Tune Up Your Sleigh: Traveling by car?  Make sure it's in tip top condition before hitting the road so that you can get the most from your gas mileage and reduce air pollution from emissions.  Take your vehicle for an oil change, check the car's fluid levels, belts and spark plugs, and make sure your tires are properly inflated.

Lighten Your Load: Do you really need three suitcases for one week?  Pack lightly when traveling.  It will make it easier for you to get around during this busy time of the year, and lighten the load on your vehicle.
